Yesterday I had the opportunity to visit with some of the Central Region Biologists and Biologists from the Fisheries Experiment Station (FES). The Central Region is collecting Northern Pike from Yuba reservoir for disease certification so that fish from here can be used as brood stock for producing Tiger Muskies. Rick from FES was there collecting milt from the male Pike to see if it can be cryogenically preserved for future use. Here's a short video of milt collection:
The Pike in Yuba are doing well. Don Wiley, Central Region Biologist, said that they are seeing more large fish and fewer of the smaller fish. Don said that if the Pike can make the jump to feeding on the Carp in Yuba, then they survive and grow.
We saw many large fish and very few small fish in the nets. The small fish that were caught were skinny and in poor shape. Here's a photo of one of the healthy Northern Pike:
